Expanded Mathematics Access Program (EMAP)
NEW!Ìý ¿ìè³É°æÊÓƵ and First in Math are pleased to announce that, beginning June 2024, students in grades 6-8, and schools that serve students in those grades, will also be eligible to participate in EMAP and the Statewide Mathematics Tournament.
To support mathematics fluency and foster the love of math within elementary students (K-5) across New York, the ¿ìè³É°æÊÓƵ launched the Expanded Mathematics Access Program (EMAP) in 2019. ¿ìè³É°æÊÓƵ has contracted with theÌýFirst In Math Online ProgramÌýto provide students in grades K-5 with free access to online standards-based, math games and activitiesÌýat no costÌýto NYS districts or students. First in Math is an optional program with flexible use, which can include enrichment/extension, fun summer learning, and/or to supplement/complement current work being done in the classroom. The additional practice provides support to assist students in meeting grade-level fluency expectations and is accessible at school and at home.Ìý It also allows for families to support their student’s math education.
Please note that First in Math is not a curriculum, and curriculum decisions remain at the local school district level in New York State. Using these free math resources is not a requirement for districts, but an additional free resource to support mathematics education.
In addition to providing the free online program, the ¿ìè³É°æÊÓƵ and First In Math host an annual Statewide Tournament (Regional Contests and Statewide Event) for mathematics. This competitive event brings together students, educators, and families, in a friendly and supportive environment geared toward encouraging students to strengthen and apply math knowledge and skills.
Reaching students at an early age and providing engaging, challenging learning opportunities will not only help students be prepared for more challenging coursework in later years, but also to be able to take advantage of the opportunities available in a world that increasingly needs individuals with strong STEM skills.
