Professional Development Opportunities

Expanded professional learning opportunities to support remote and hybrid learning are available for New York’s educators.

NYSCATE Courses and Webinars

The Department is pleased to be partnering with the New York State Association for Computers and Technology in Education (NYSCATE) thanks to funding made available through the federal CARES Act 1, to offer professional development courses Beginning in May 2021. Courses were developed and will be facilitated by New York educators, aligned to New York State standards and expectations of quality, that reflect an understanding of New York’s regional variations and needs.Ìý

NYSCATE will also provide two webinar series, one for teachers and one for parents, on topics related to technology and remote learning, also starting in May 2021.

NYSCATE, an organization for educational technology with a membership of more than 25,000 educators and administrators in New York State, is an affiliate of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), the Consortium of School Networking (CoSN), and the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA), three national leading organizations in educational technology.

Who Can Participate?

Teacher licenses will be given out to teachers based on the district that they work for – with priority going to New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Yonkers, and Target Districts. During the first 30 days, there will be a closed registration period. NYSCATE will distribute up to 75,000 licenses during this time based on the following set of criteria:

  • New York City: 30,000 teacher licenses total
  • Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Yonkers: 750 teacher licenses each
  • 183 Target Districts: 150 teacher licenses each
  • All other Public School Districts: 7,800 teacher licenses total
  • BOCES, Charter Schools, and Nonpublic Schools: 6,750 teacher licenses total

If a teacher requests a license, but the cap has already been reached for their category, NYSCATE will put them on a waitlist. Thirty days after the launch of the Learning Management System (June 3rd), any licenses that have not been claimed will be available to all teachers regardless of district, with teachers that are on the waitlist getting first priority. All courses are asynchronous, so teachers can sign up for licenses at any time without losing the opportunity to participate.

Teaching in Remote/Hybrid Learning Environments

New York was one of 11 states to be awarded Education Stabilization Fund-Rethink K12 Education Models Grant funds by the USDOE​. The nearly $20 million awarded through this initiative have launched ¿ìè³É°æÊÓƵ’s TRLE program​. The purpose of the program is to build the capacity of teachers and educational leaders to effectively implement remote/hybrid learning for all students. This will provide more than 190,000 teachers and educational leaders across the State with a combined 450,000 hours of professional support to implement effective practices in remote/hybrid teaching and learning which, in turn, will reach an estimated two million students.

The first phase of the TRLE program focuses on rapid deployment of professional learning to the field in six core competencies:

  • Shifting to Teaching OnlineÌý​
  • Engaging Families as Partners in Remote/Hybrid LearningÌý​
  • Meeting the needs of SWDs through Remote/HybridÌýLearningÌý​
  • Meeting the needs of ELLs/MLLs through Remote-HybridÌýLearningÌýÌý​
  • IntegratingÌýCulturally-ResponsiveÌýSustaining EducationÌý(CRSE) in Remote Learning EnvironmentsÌý​
  • Integrating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in RemoteÌýLearning Environments.Ìý
